Definition Hard substrate areas dominated by sessile (or mostly sessile) gastropods, often suspension feeders. Fauna in this biotic group may construct thick calcareous growths, but do not occur in abundance that is judged sufficient to construct a substrate; where these species are sufficiently abundant that they do construct substrate, they are classified in the Reef Class as Mollusk Reef (see above).
