Definition (a) A dike along the side of a river channel erected to prevent overflow during floods, usually running along the channel direction and near the natural levee crests of streams. (b) An artificial embankment constructed along the bank of a watercourse or an arm of the sea to protect land from inundation (or to confine stream flow to its channel).
