Definition Areas dominated by calcareous algae that incorporate calcium carbonate into their tissues, support their own weight, and have an upright growth form. Calcareous algae can form carpets on the bottom, and—as they decay—the calcareous skeletons remain behind, occasionally forming loose accumulations on the bottom resembling chips. Calcareous algae that occur in a reef setting are included in the Colonized Shallow and Mesophotic Reef biotic group.
