Definition Deep, slow circulation in the abyssal zone driven by horizontal differences in density of water masses. The vast majority of ocean circulation is of this type, initiating by the sinking of cold water in the high latitudes to the ocean bottom, and spreading throughout the abyssal plains of the ocean basins.
