Definition A large long-wavelength (tens or hundreds of kilometers) ocean wave that is generated by a powerful undersea disturbance such as a landslide, earthquake, or volcano. The wave is nearly imperceptible in the open ocean but as it approaches land, it can reach heights of many tens of meters. They can have enormous destructive impact on the coast (and inland), as well as the biology of the nearshore zone.
